Why do Mr. and Mrs. Wormwood's dislike of their daughter in the novel, Matilda?

It seems the reason the Wormwoods dislike their daughter so much because she shows them up for what they are - uncouth and unintelligent. They feel insecure around her, so they put her down to make themselves feel better.
