In the novel, Matched, by Condie, the main theme is that of love. In Cassia's society everyone finds out who they will be 'linked' to. Her match is determined by the society and not the individual. The problem arises when her 'matching chip' shows two different matches. Cassia struggles with the duty she feels for her way of life, but at the same time feels compelled to break the rules that have made her society work for so long. Different types of love are explored through the theme of love, including self sacrificing love, rebellious love, generous love, love for a family member, and of course, romantic love. All of them are shown to be powerful agents, for either good or evil.
