The literary devices used in Matched are many and varied. A few of them include setting. The setting is similar to the modern world, but with some futuristic additions. The place is supposed to be a shining utopian society, but we learn that it isn't that at all.

Secondly, a literary device used is the first person narrative, which allows the reader insight into the inner thoughts of Cassia.

Themes used include love, rules and regulations, and personal sacrifice. 

Cottonwood seeds represent freedom and beauty, and is used as the literary device of symbolism.
