How does the author use foreshadowing in Master of the Game?

In Chapter Three, Jamie is lured into a beating that leaves him stranded in the desert. The reader is afraid for Jamie, afraid he will die this time. However, Jamie is strong and he fights to stay alive, filling his mind with hatred for Van der Merwe. Jamie's anger, touching on the theme of revenge, foreshadows a future for Jamie if he can survive his current situation.
