How does Athol Fugard use imagery in Master Harold and the Boys?

In the script for the play, the St. Georges tearoom is described as consisting of one room with a small kitchen in the back. The pastries are said to be stale and the pastry displays to be unappetizing. Decorations in the tearoom include “a few sad ferns in pots”, and most importantly, there are no customers.
