How does the author use foreshadowing in Mary Barton?

From the moment they meet as children, it is obvious that Jem is smitten with Mary. It is also obvious that she doesn't feel the same way. Their love/ hate relationship as children foreshadows their relationship as adults. Jem, however, proves that love conquers all.
