What were the problems associated with Du Bois' theory of "twoness" as noted in Martin & Malcolm & America: A Dream or a Nightmare?

Concerning DuBois's theory of "twoness," many people did not believe that African Americans could be both American and Negro. Given the racist thoughts that plagued America, many people did not think that African Americans could declare themselves as both American and Negro.
