The events of the narrative taking place in Silver Lake in Northern Michigan unfold in the past - specifically, in the early 2000's. As noted above, the novel's settings in time tend to not play a direct role in the story, although there are a few references to how the relationship between Cat and Marlena was so intense that they had little or no awareness of national or world events of the time - present-day Cat, as she narrates the past, says that for example, she and Marlena had little or no sense of the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003, post 9-11.
