Coincidence and timing are recurring ideas in the book. As the plot unfolds, and as the myriad of personalities are developed, one cannot help but realize the impact that coincidence and timing have on everyone's life. Religious individuals refer to this as God's plan for each of our lives; secular proponents may call it "fate" or accident. Nevertheless, every adult can look back upon his or her life and realize that each circumstance or event led to the next in an unending procession of experiences which have led to the present.
