From the last paragraph we can infer the narrator's life has been full, but that she has always carried regret for her youthful actions.... for hurting Miss Lottie. In destroying the marigolds, Lizabeth truly sees hurt for the first time.... the effects of hurting another person. Because of this, she also learns compassion.

In the last line of the story, we see Lizabeth's realization that no matter how difficult the life..... there is always beauty to be found if your willing to look for it.
