The narrator, Lizabeth, is on the brink of becoming a woman..... though she isn't quite there. She is fourteen, adventurous, and she is growing up during the depression. Lizabeth feels a lot of ander and frustration over her family's financial situation, and the way it affects her family..... particularly, her mother and father. Over the course of the story, Lizabeth learns the difference between acting out and outright cruelty.

Miss Lottie is a woman. She too, is living through the depression. Unlike Lizabeth, she uses her frustration to care for her marigolds.... the one thing in her life that is beautiful.
