Marigolds

Beyond the dusty brown yard, in front of the sorry gray house, rose suddenly and shockingly a dazzling strip of bright blossoms, clumped together in enormous mounds, warm and passionate and sun-golden.

From her observation, we learn that Lizabeth is able to appreciate the beauty of the flowers..... of nature. She sees that beauty in this otherwise dismal place, and yet, she cannot understand it.
