The main them has to do with guilt and regret after causing suffering of another. Lizabeth destroys Miss Lottie's marigolds in an attempt to release the anger and frustration she feels about her life. Her father has been crying and she has nowhere to put her pain. Making someone else feel badly seems to offer some respite for Lizabeth. In reality, it only adds shame to her misery.
