What is the importance of the Finsterwald's house in the novel, Maniac Magee?

The Finsterwald’s home is a type of haunted house for the children of Two Mills. No one dares to go into the backyard or front porch, and the house is shrouded with mystery. Maniac performs a series of stunts at the house to prove that the unknown doesn’t always have to be scary.
