When King Louis XIV is first imprisoned at the Bastille, what does he think has become of him in the novel, The Man in the Iron Mask?

When King Louis XIV is first deposited into his cell, he sinks into a reverie where he believes he has died. He feels as if in a dreamlike horror that would be impossible to realize in real life. He doesn't realize he is merely in prison until he sees a rat in his cell.
