The story is set in an imaginary time and place. The descriptions are wildly imaginative and, in some cases, leave a great deal to the imagination. There are several specific settings within the overall setting. One is the castle which is really a large city set within the walls. This is where the Heap family lives until they are forced to flee the city. The walls are so thick there is a tavern within a section of the wall that has been completely forgotten and abandoned. Another setting is the Wizard's Tower which is a highly magical place where Marcia lives until she runs away in an attempt to protect Jenna.
