Ross tells Macbeth that he has been promoted to Thane of Cawdor. This was the suggestion of the second witch. Knowing this spurs Macbeth onto considering being king more seriously. His obsessive mind starts churning away until the suggestion by the witch becomes a self-fulfilling reality.
