Hubert Humphrey shared the ticket with Johnson during the 1964 election. He moved into the vice-presidency from the Senate. A reasonable man, Humphrey came to his own conclusions, but he publicly supported the president until he could no longer tolerate the disastrous Vietnam policies. Humphrey was nominated by the Democratic Party in 1968, but lost to Richard Nixon by a narrow margin.
