The inciting incident would be Lyddie's father leaving to take part in the gold rush. This leaves the family destitute. Rising actions could include Lyddie going to work at the tavern, her brother working at the factory, her lending money to a slave, and learning that her baby sister has died. The climax would be Lyddie catching Mr. Marsden attempting to rape one of the workers and getting fired so she won't be able to tell anyone what happened. Falling action would be that she receives money from the slave she'd lent money to and the resolution would be that she uses the money to go to college known for accepting women.
