How did Lucy's life in America become routine and depressing in the novel, Lucy?

Lucy's hours were based upon keeping a routine. She took four girls to school, fed them lunch, and afterward, she read to them and played with them. When the children were away, Lucy studied. Lucy also hated the winter months.
