The novel’s climactic scene takes place in a country club in Chicago. There, Caleb, Lancaster, and other wealthy, white, and powerful magic users negotiate over Atticus as if he were a piece of property. Symbolically, this scene represents the use of power and privilege by white people to perpetuate racial oppression.
