Why does Jaime have to live with his uncle?

Jaime's parents were killed in a car accident. After their deaths, his uncle provides the money that allows Jamie to continue in his boarding school. When the fur trade suffers, however, his uncle can no longer afford the school, and Jaime is forced to leave school and leave with his uncle.
