According to the author, her mother had respect for "lazy women." Laziness was a sign of success if the wife and mother could stay home, have a maid, and do as little work as possible. It was at the heart of feminine power, and included the ability to have others do things for you. To be pampered was a good thing and most Polish women of this time viewed the world in the same way.
