Parenting is a symbol and a metaphor in the narrative. Parenting is the most important job a person will ever have in their lifetime. Unfortunately, this fact is coupled with the reality that anyone can become pregnant, and have children. There are no exams, no criteria that must be met, and no base line of intelligence that is required. If you take a minute to consider the fact that the children we raise will not only be responsible for us in our old age, but also for raising the next generation, you might pause to consider why we are so blase about the truth of this responsibility.
