What's the meaning behind this quote? “They understood only too well the liberation into savagery that the concealing paint brought.” (Chapter 11 pg. 172)

In context, the paint, much like a mask, affords a sense of detachment from one's true self. The concealing paint allowed the boys to say and do things they never would have done otherwise.
