What could Ralph could do to protect himself from Jack?

He alienates himself from the others, especially Piggy (who was his staunchest supporter). He gives in to his baser side and begins to enjoy the bloody sports that the others engage in. And, in essence, he should have somehow dominated Jack from the beginning by establishing his leadership in a significant way. Separating Jack from his supporters would have been a smarter move.
