Jack goes against the protagonist, Ralph, and introduces chaos into the novel.

He portrays evil when he turns the entire group against Ralph, on a man hunt to kill him.

Jack, adept at manipulating the other boys, represents the instinct of savagery within human beings, as opposed to the civilizing instinct Ralph represents.
