Lizzie is the first person of color Turner has ever met. He is completely taken with Lizzie: he finds to be the most free-spirited and down to earth person he has ever known. Lizzie likes Turner's kind nature. There is great resistence to this interacial relationship in the town. Turner's father and the town in general are against the friendship of Turner and Lizzie but that does not dissuade Turner from pursuing the relationship.
