Vampires and supernatural creatures make up the main theme of the book. This novel exists in an alternate reality in which vampires have come out of hiding and are asking for the government to accept them as a new class of citizens. In this reality, people have believed for many years that vampires are only a piece of fiction, creatures created in someone's imagination. However, some of these vampires have come forward, tired of living in secrecy, and have asked to be recognized. This causes a great deal of concern among humans, especially when most humans are under the impression that vampires need to kill humans in order to survive.
