Age of Faith features Del, who is twelve years old. She's struglling with how religion should figure in her life. She goes to several churches trying to gain different perspectives, speaks with her brother Owen about it, but he doesn't answer her. Later, when she tells her mother that she's going to church, her mother tells her that religion is fiction, made by man. In the Spring Del and her brother go to visit their father. While there their dog, Major, ends up having to be put down because he has taken to killing sheep. It devastates both children, but especially Owen. What bothers Del the most about Major having to be put down is the fact that her father is so cavalier about it and will have no problem putting a gun to their beloved dog. She asks Owen if they should pray about it and just as she says it she realizes that often prayer and real life don't always work and play well together.
