Motherhood is one of the symbolic mediums through which the author repeatedly examines the central themes of the story. Mothers are traditionally the center of a household, and the relationships we have with our mothers often define us into adulthood. Motherhood is physically and psychologically linked to every human's development. In Little Fires Everywhere, Celeste Ng utilizes the maternal motif; repeated with mother-daughter relationships, pregnancies, surrogacy, adoption, and abortion- to highlight how an individual develops an identity from their origins and a sense of belonging from their mothers.
