Why do Lisa's parents ignore her repeated assertions that she is mentally ill in the novel, Lisa, Bright and Dark?

Neither of Lisa's parents are prepared to deal with the negative consequences of having a mentally ill daughter. They would rather ignore the situation than deal with it, and they hope that if they ignore the situation it will somehow resolve itself.
