Early in the novel, Lisa is shown repeatedly smashing her head into a headboard. Later, in the novel's first crisis, Lisa is shown repeatedly stabbing herself deeply with a pin. At the middle of the novel Lisa physically assaults Elizabeth Frazer, an action not without danger. Later, Lisa attempts suicide by walking through a floor-to-ceiling window deliberately. Finally, Lisa attempts suicide by overdosing on sleeping pills. Lisa's suicide attempts are not successful nor particularly serious. Rather, they are engineered as cries for help.
