The lust for power drives several of the characters of this story, and becomes vital motif in the story. Roger, who has been recently returned from the grave by Thom, still has his old desires of holding the throne. Now, his lust for power has grown, and he would rather be a god instead. Roger is able to use several other nobles, due to their lust for power, as tools to launch a rebellion that almost destroys all of Tortall. Roger intends to drain the gift off of several sorcerers to feed his own, making him super powerful, even more powerful than some of the gods. Roger's lust for power has driven him mad, and he will stop at nothing to gain that power, even the destruction of his own land.
