Courage is another dominant theme of the book. This novel takes place in the early days of the war in the Pacific and most of the main characters are in the military. They have the courage to perform many heroic activities as is usual during wartime. The men on Baku Island survive by stealing from the Japanese. Members of the group volunteer for the raiding assignments, in spite of the danger.
