Lila is a troubled woman. In the first scene, Lila enters a bar in Kingston, searching for Richard Rigel. She is described as temperamental and easily angered and, in fact, it is inferred that she suffers from a serious mental condition. Lila attaches herself to Phaedrus in hopes that he will allow her to sail with him to Florida. For Lila, Florida is a symbol of paradise..... an opportunity to make a new start.
