While the afterlife might be considered more of a metaphysical idea, it takes the form of setting in multiple poems throughout the collection. This occurs most notably in “The Speed of Belief,” wherein the speaker imagines the afterlife as several different physical environments. One such environment is that of a jungle inhabited by extinct species of tigers, as well as the speaker’s father. Another such environment is a city with an orchard situated past its outskirts. In the poem “My God, It’s Full of Stars” the speaker imagines the afterlife as a more abstract setting, describing it as a wide open space where everything that ever was is all existing at once.
