Why does Pi think Richard Parker does not try to kill the zebra?

Pi thinks it is strange that the tiger hasn't killed the zebra, but then he sees the hyena and decides the tiger must have fallen off the boat and drowned, I think Richard Parker knows the hyena will kill the zebra.
