Whois Mamaji? What is he famous for?

Pi calls him Mamaji, an Indian term that means respected uncle. He was actually his father's good friend. He taught Pi to swim. His uncle loved a Parisian pool called the Piscine Molitor. He describes the pool: ‘If you want your son to have a clean soul, you must take him one day to swim in the Piscine Molitor.’
