How does Richard Parker help Pi survive his ordeal? Does Pi survive because of him or in spite of him?

In my opinion, Pi survives in spite of Richard Parker. The two call a kind of truce, and in the end, Richard Parker provides Pi with a sense of companionship... which in turn, helps to keep him alive.
