The boy's name "pi" carries a number of relevant associations. Dominant and submissive creatures relate to the same letters in the Greek alphabet: alpha and omega. Pi is also an irrational mathematical number, used to calculate distance in a circle. Rationality is an idea constantly challenged by Pi in the book.
