Morality vs necessity is a recurring idea in this story. In Life Expectancy, there are examples of moral and honest people doing things that they would never normally do, but faced with situations that are out of the ordinary they must make choices that would normally go against the grain of their beliefs. For example, Nurse Charlene Coleman is a woman who's life is dedicated to helping those in medical need. She is a virtuous and honest woman who enjoys her job and gets satisfaction from it.
