While some people react to a crisis with panic, others show their fear in different ways. The children at school all seem very quiet and subdued. They do not know how to react and are confused about what it all means to them. When the storm strikes they begin crying and screaming, and some think that they are going to die. Others begin to laugh nervously, which is a hysterical reaction to fear and stress. Miranda herself exhibits this behavior when the storm hits and she thinks about all the people who have already died.
