Justice is a strong recurring idea through this book. Throughout Cheng's time of imprisonment, she has few things to motivate her. Each week is filled with more interrogations and false accusations about the role she played while working at Shell and her involvement as an alleged foreign spy. However, Cheng continues to maintain her innocence throughout the entire ordeal.
