What does Guido do for Dora to communicate that he and his son are still alive in the film, Life Is Beautiful?

Since they entered the concentration camp, Guido hasn't seen or communicated with Dora. In order to let her know that both he and Giosuy are still alive and safe, he puts on a record they both love and turns the speaker out the window, so that she can hear the music.
