Disappointment defines the Loftis family. Milton's father is disappointed in him for not living up to the older man's expectations. Milton never pays his father any mind when his father tries to impart the wisdom of his experience. Eventually, Milton becomes a disappointment to himself and his wife. Helen notices that Milton has a drinking problem even before they are married. Helen's marriage is a disappointment to her.
