Who is Berto from Legends of the Fall and what is their importance?

Berto is the Italian, who helps Slats in The Man Who Gave Up His Name. He pulls a gun on Nordstrom and breaks into Nordstrom's hotel room to scare him. Nordstrom, however, is ready for Berto and throws him out the window.
