Violence and helplessness connected with control are themes in this poem. Rape includes all three of these and the Swan certainly rapes Leda. Yeats wrote "Leda and the Swan" during the turbulent days of the Irish Civil War. In 1922. Although the story is based on Greek myth, one cannot escape the metaphor with the Irish Civil War.
