Who is Prostitutes from Leaves of Grass and what is their importance?

Prostitutes appear in the poem, To a Common Prostitute. Whitman has a fondness for all people, including prostitutes. He even used prostitutes as the main subject in several of his poems. In the poem, To a Common Prostitute, Whitman tells the woman that she will never excluded from his life.
