Mary's mother remains unnamed throughout the novel. She and Mary do not get along, the main point of contention being her mother's desire to assimilate completely, and Mary's desire to embrace tradition. After Mary's father leaves the family, her mother remarries a man with a drinking problem..... a man who teaches her children to drink as well.
